Emily Parker’s interest in the Arab world began after she taught herself Arabic on a whim during her first semester of college. She graduated summa cum laude from Tufts University in 2011 with a B.A. in Middle Eastern Studies, also having studied in 2010 at Middlebury’s C.V. Starr School in the Middle East (Alexandria, Egypt). Emily received the U.S. State Department’s Critical Language Scholarship to study Arabic in Egypt (2009) and in Tunisia (2011). After the completion of her language program in 2011, Emily could not bear to leave Tunisia, and she quickly found work as a writer and editor for Tunisia’s first English news agency, Tunisia Live. Since the summer of 2011, Emily has worked intermittently for Tunisia Live, the National Democratic Institute, and for various other internationally-focused NGOs in Washington, D.C. She is interested in journalism, human rights, and international development. In her (copious) free time, Emily is an avid salsa, swing, and blues dancer.
