The kidnapping and killing of three Israeli teenagers, who disappeared on June 12 while hitchhiking from an Israeli settlement near Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank, set off a the largest Israeli military in the West Bank in over a decade. More recently, the body of a missing Palestinian teenager, 16-year-old Mohamed Hussein Abu Khdeir, was found in East Jerusalem. Abu Khdeir was kidnapped in occupied East Jerusalem and his body was found burned near the city in what Israeli police believe to be a revenge attack.
The killing comes as part of a wider campaign of anti-Arab racism in Israel. On Tuesday, hundreds of rightwing Israelis took to the streets of Jerusalem physically assaulting at least five Palestinians as they chanted “death to Arabs”. There have been several other hate crimes in separate incidents.
